Recipes:
Gesso
Rabbit skin glue soaked in water over-night, bring to a slow boil, turn off the heat & add whiting (calcium carbonate) until it appears to be a very heavy cream. Use hot or cold (zinc white or titanium white powder may be added to suit –use respirator when handling large amounts of dry pigment). Zinc white is a transparent white metal oxide that naturally cakes when placed in solution. [Lead white is usually avoided due to hazard concerns when handling. New concerns are similarly presented now for titanium white, since it has been proven to be a carcinogen.] Home made gesso may be refrigerated, but contains no formaldehyde or other preservative, and the glue is an excellent growth medium for mold & mildew. Thymol crystals dissolved in alcohol may be added in tiny amounts to act as a preservative.

Encaustic & heat:
Melt beeswax blocks or pastilles in metal containers (* avoid open flame due to low flash point ). Add 1/3 dry pigment by volume with care (to avoid pigment dust while breathing & wash hands thoroughly to avoid ingesting – no eating or drinking in studio or near dry pigment dust – environmental surfaces or clothes) apply while liquid to hot or cold inflexible surface.

Encaustic & water
Mix pastilles & small amounts of water in a dedicated blender container, whip at high speed until similar to Vaseline in texture. Place in a tightly covered container. Mix with wet or dry pigment as needed apply with any desired applicator: bristle brush, palette or painting knives or spatulas.

Encaustic & solvent
Same as above in application but is thinned with odorless mineral spirits & added to similarly solvent based paint. (* do not use heat without adequate ventilation & added precautions for fire. It behaves in the presence of open flame in a manner much like napalm)

All these encaustic forms may be painted over most drawing materials: conté crayon or pencil, watercolor crayon, oil pastel or ink wash.
