This class explores the major themes in portrait drawing in color, from 'conte drawing' to 'full color oil crayon drawing'

Each class begins with a lecture note handout including a bibliography & followed by a discussion . We select a pose and draw from live models, working to complete a single drawing by the end of class. This is followed by a short game of critique tag (limited to positive criticism only!) Student work is digitally photographed & available as as 'student work' with the days class notes & then projected at the beginning of the next class as a slide show. In this way we can see the progress made by all as the classes progress.

Class 1 explores materials used in the class including local & on line sources and economics of material selection. We will also review drawing fundamentals as they apply to color portrait drawing. Then the class & instructor will draw the model.until time for the critique.

Class 2 explores the different approaches to drawing the head including: gesture, and 2 types of 'blocking'. A short lecture on color theory & its application in portraiture.

Class 3 approaches to producing preliminary drawing & layout work. A short discussion of grissaille ( gray) underpainting to establish value first.

Class 4 color alternatives to conte: pastels & colored pencils. A short discussion of toned paper.

Class 5 treating color as value. Ignoring local color.

Class 6 oil & watercolor crayon variations.

Class 7 mixed media & compatibility.

Class 8 Final project critique & final drawing

We will explore ways to preserve and develop highlight whites, as well as how to create a living black, and the best most effective color combinations used to create shadow. Live model subjects will be provided for each class & we will end the class series with a self-portrait or other optional subject drawing taken from contemporary sources.

Leave the class with comfortable advanced skills and feel ready to take on any portrait drawing project

Begin by giving yourself permission to explore. We all learn by exploration. Fill your sketchbook with projects, pieced samples, & visual ideas. Treat the sketchbook as a journal for visual thinking.

PORTRAIT DRAWING sequence progression:Gesture,Contour, Weighted Line, Value,Detail

This class will focus on the: tools, materials & techniques specific to color portrait drawing.

While it is the major motivation in portraiture. 'accurate image making' is not the entire point. Real images or subjects are not guides for our work, they are only excuses to do the image making. The drawing is the primary motivating force, taking liberties is expected. Each time, ask "does this benefit the finished drawing?" The drawing is the point, attaining a likeness is the excuse.

Process & Imposed Forms
(Initial class subjects)

Paper types &, materials choices, making your own, punching up color. Contemporary portrait techniques, pure color, mixed media, playing with color, palettes, boards and storage. Match materials to the subject.

In the class, I would like you to produce two kinds of homework: a drawing outside of class, and other sketches in the sketchbook. Try to do the drawings and sketches every two or three days to develop your eye-hand coordination – rather than doing them all at once. Someone who draws every day or two will accrue twice the benefit of the person who does the drawing at the last minute before class.

Homework for the first class- As your first homework, I want you to produce a portrait to act as a reference, or starting point – a base line of comparison: taken from available subject matter (photos or web images). We may show them later in class next week if you wish, but they are for your reference, to evaluate progress.
